Dress and Grooming (All Grade Levels)

The district’s dress code teaches grooming and hygiene, prevents disruption, and minimizes

safety hazards. Students and parents may determine a student’s personal dress and grooming

standards, provided they comply with the policy.

People tend to act in the manner of the occasion for which they are dressed. If students dress

appropriately for business, then schoolwork is likely to proceed in a business-like manner.

It is the philosophy of this school district that parents take the responsibility for sending their

children to school neatly groomed and properly dressed in apparel that promotes good health,

safety, and well-being of the student. It is impossible to write regulations that will cover all types of

behavior and dress which will affect the image of our school in the eyes of our own students and

others. However, we believe that if the parents fail to exercise this responsibility and permit the

student to come to school improperly dressed, then school officials should exercise discretion and

counsel with the parent, and/or take corrective action. Continued violation of accepted school

district standards of dress will result in further disciplinary action. Dress code violations are a

Class I offense.

All areas of student dress and rapidly changing styles cannot be covered in this document. The

specific areas addressed are expressly forbidden and those areas not mentioned remain at the

review and discretion of the campus principal.

When campus-level administrative regulations regarding new or specific items of clothing,

hairstyles, etc., become necessary, the principal will prominently display in writing those

regulations for general student and parent knowledge and understanding.

The decisions of the campus principal are final and cannot be appealed.

The Beckville ISD dress code is established to teach hygiene, instill discipline, prevent

disruption, and avoid safety hazards.

The student and parent may determine the student’s personal dress and grooming standards,

provided that the following general guidelines are met:

1. Clothing shall fit properly and be in good repair. Sweatpants, joggers & leggings are

allowed. When leggings, sweatpants, & joggers are worn, the student’s top must provide full

coverage of the buttocks & front pelvic area. Pants must be a solid color. NO FRONT

TUCKS ARE ALLOWED!

2. Shorts and skirt length may be no more than four (4) inches from the top of the kneecap.

Dress shorts and athletic shorts are acceptable. All shorts must be a solid color. Shorts may not

resemble swim trunks. In grades K – 5 the principal may approve other types of shorts. Final

discretion will be the decision of the campus principal.

3. Dresses, blouses, shirts, or other tops should be fastened over the shoulder and should be

constructed to adequately cover the body and undergarments, with the neckline and openings

constructed so as not to be revealing. Muscle shirts and tank tops are not appropriate.

4. Appropriate undergarments must be worn at all times. Undergarments shall not be seen

outside or through clothing.

5. Sagging pants or low-rise pants which expose undergarments at the waistline are not allowed.

6. Advertising of alcoholic beverages, drugs, tobacco or obscene or questionable printing or

pictures on clothing or caps is not allowed. This will include but not be limited to satanic,

derogatory, racial, vulgar content, or violent content.

7. Proper shoes shall be worn to school. No bare feet or house shoes will be allowed.

*ELEMENTARY ONLY* No flip flops, shoes must have heel/ankle straps.

8. Hats, caps, hoodies, bandanas, nonprescription sunglasses, combs, picks, and other head

coverings will not be permitted in the school during school hours.

9. Hair shall be worn clean, neatly groomed, & trimmed above the eyes so that the student’s

vision is not obstructed nor safety impaired. Male students’ hair shall not touch the top of the

shoulders. Students shall come to school cleanly shaven. Sideburns shall be no longer than

the bottom of the ear. A variety of hairstyles are acceptable if the following extremes are

avoided:

a. Mohawks, faux hawks, geometric or unusual patterns or portions shaved or cut in the

hair of males or females

b. Ponytails or man buns on males.

c. Unnatural hair color and feather or tinsel extensions are not allowed.

10. Male students are not allowed to wear earrings or studs.

11. Body, nose, or face rings or piercing jewelry may not be worn by any student. Ear gauges and

expanders/spacers are not allowed by any student.

12. No visible body tattoos will be allowed.

13. Pajamas or attire that imitates sleepwear or loungewear are not to be worn to school.

14. Students will not be permitted to wear extremely low-cut shirts or blouses, half shirts that

expose a bare midriff when raising your arms over your head, halter tops, backless/strapless

tops, open side garments, fish net, mesh, or see through materials.

15. Holes exposing skin or under garments in jeans must not be higher than 4 inches above the

knee.

16. Headphones or ear buds are not allowed to be worn in ears unless being used during a

lesson in class required by the teacher. Students are not permitted to wear them in their ears

walking from class to class or around campus.

17. Special dress may be permitted for special events: Homecoming, Favorites Party, Field

Days, Field Trips, Prom. With the exception of these events or other events designated by

the campus principal, all students will be expected to conform to the dress code as outlined

in this handbook at school and school related activities.

If the principal determines that a student’s grooming or clothing violates the school’s dress code,

the student will be given an opportunity to correct the problem at school. If not corrected, the

student will be assigned to in-school suspension for the remainder of the day, until the problem

is corrected, or until a parent or designee brings an acceptable change of clothing to the school.

Repeated or severe offenses may result in more serious disciplinary action in accordance with

the Student Code of Conduct.
